Becoming a Member of United Federal Credit Union is simple. You can join online through United’s website or visit any of our nearly 40 branch locations nationwide.

There is no fee to become a member of United Federal Credit Union.

To join, you simply open and fund a Membership Savings account with a minimum of $5, which represents your ownership share in the credit union. This $5 is not a fee—it remains your money and would be returned to you if you ever close your membership.

When you become a member of United, your $5 Membership Savings represents your share or ownership of the credit union—making you a member‑owner.

Beyond ownership, you gain access to a full suite of financial products, digital tools, and personalized service designed to support your everyday banking needs and long‑term financial goals.

Yes. The money you have at United is insured up to $250,000 by the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) through the National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund and fully backed by the full faith and credit of the U.S. government.

Absolutely. For the past 28 years, United has consistently earned a 5‑star rating from BauerFinancial, one of the nation’s most respected financial rating agencies. This distinction—combined with capital levels that significantly exceed the NCUA’s “well‑capitalized” threshold—reinforces United’s strength, stability, and commitment to being a safe, financially sound institution for its Members.

We may be a little biased—but there are some clear reasons why many people find a credit union to be the better choice:

  1. Member Ownership
Credit unions are not-for-profit and owned by their members, while banks are for-profit and owned by shareholders. That difference means a credit union’s focus is on serving members—not maximizing profits.
  2. Fewer Fees
In general, credit unions tend to offer fewer and lower fees than banks, particularly compared to large national institutions.
  3. Better Rates & Dividends
Because credit unions return earnings to members, they often provide more competitive dividend rates on savings products and lower rates on loans.
  4. More Personal Experience
Credit unions are known for being community-focused and relationship-driven, offering a more personalized experience—rather than a transactional one where you feel like just another account number.

Everyone’s different, and it really comes down to what you want most in a financial partner. In general, though, credit unions tend to offer better value and put members first.
