frequently asked questions
A: The amount of shred accepted can vary by event, and specific limits will be outlined in the event details. Generally, we ask participants to limit their shred to 10 boxes, bins, or bags to ensure everyone has the opportunity to dispose of their documents before capacity is reached. If space remains at the end of the event, we may be able to accept additional material beyond the 10-container limit, but it’s not guaranteed.
A: Bring paper documents that contain personal or financial information you want securely destroyed, such as financial statements, credit card offers, tax documents, medical information, and bills. Do not bring plastics, electronics, CDs/DVDs, hard drives, or other non-paper items, unless otherwise noted in the event details.
A: Nope! All shred events hosted by United are open to the entire community. However, when United sponsors shred or recycling events (hosted by different organization), the rules for participation may differ—so be sure to review the event details for full qualifications.
A: This can vary by event, but generally, staples, standard-size paper clips, and rubber bands can remain on your documents. However, larger items—such as binder clips—must be removed to prevent damage to the shredding equipment.
A: This process can vary by event. At some events, the collected documents are shredded right there on-site—sometimes even allowing you to watch the destruction on a small display screen—while other events collect the documents in secure bins and transport them back to a facility for immediate destruction.
A: Yes. Throwing sensitive documents in the trash or recycling leaves your information vulnerable to theft. Shredding provides a secure way to destroy documents so personal data cannot be reconstructed or misused, offering greater protection against identity theft.
A: Yes. When documents are shredded at an event, the shredded paper is usually recycled into new products, helping reduce waste and conserve natural resources. This means you’re not only protecting your identity, you’re also supporting environmental sustainability.
A: Shredding helps protect your personal and financial information from identity theft and fraud. Documents like bank statements, tax records, medical paperwork, and pre-approved credit offers can contain sensitive details that criminals can misuse if they fall into the wrong hands.
