SOUTH BEND, Ind. – A season of strikeouts translated into meaningful support for local families facing hunger. Through the South Bend Cubs' "Strike Out Hunger" campaign, United Federal Credit Union (United) turned every strikeout thrown during the 2026 season into a contribution to the Food Bank of Northern Indiana, helping expand access to meals for children and families in need.
The Cubs pitchers delivered 1,191 strikeouts this season, generating a promised donation of $5,955. United increased its contribution to $6,000 to help fight hunger in the community.

"Strike Out Hunger is a powerful example of what can happen when people come together to help their neighbors,” said Jacob Alexander, United’s Senior Market Development Manager in Indiana. “Every strikeout represents something bigger than a statistic on the field. It represents meals for families in our communities. This marks our second year supporting the campaign, and we are proud to continue investing in an initiative that directly impacts kids throughout Northern Indiana. Every child in our community should have access to nutritious food that helps them learn and grow.”
Although baseball season has come to an end, the impact of the campaign is just beginning. The Food Bank of Northern Indiana will use the funds to support its Food 4 Kids Backpack Program, which helps provide nutritious meals to children facing food insecurity throughout the school year.
The Food 4 Kids Backpack Program is designed for students in grades K-6 and is free to eligible students. Participating schools are identified as having a high rate of children eligible for free/reduced lunch programs. During the 2025-2026 school year, students in 20 schools in Elkhart, LaPorte, Marshall, Starke and St. Joseph Counties participated in the program.

Now in its second year, United's sponsorship of Strike Out Hunger has provided a total of $12,000 to the Food Bank of Northern Indiana, helping expand access to food assistance for local children and families.
