protect yourself from disaster scams

Unfortunately, scammers often take advantage of people recovering from wildfires and other disasters. Be cautious of anyone who pressures you to make an immediate decision, promises guaranteed disaster assistance, or demands payment by wire transfer, gift card, cryptocurrency, payment app, or cash.

Before hiring someone for clean-up or repairs:

  • Check that contractors are properly licensed and insured.
  • Get estimates and agreements in writing before work begins.
  • Be skeptical of promises of immediate clean-up or repairs.
  • Never pay the full cost of repair work upfront.
  • Never pay someone a fee to help you qualify for FEMA disaster assistance.
