ST. JOSEPH, Mich. – United Federal Credit Union (United) is proud to announce its recognition as one of the 2025 Best Credit Unions to Work For, a prestigious honor awarded by American Banker in partnership with Best Companies Group. This annual program celebrates credit unions that excel in workplace culture, employee satisfaction, and organizational impact.

United is proud to announce its recognition as one of the 2025 Best Credit Unions to Work For, a prestigious honor awarded by American Banker in partnership with Best Companies Group

This year’s list includes sixty-eight credit unions across the United States, ranging from Southwest Financial in Texas with 29 employees and $85 million in assets, to Golden 1 Credit Union in California with 2,149 employees and $20 billion in assets.

“We’re honored to be recognized among the best in the nation,” said Terry O’Rourke, President and CEO of United. “This award reflects the incredible energy, compassion, and commitment of Team United. Our employees bring purpose and positivity to everything they do, whether they’re supporting a colleague, serving a member, or engaging with the community. It’s their passion that makes United a place where people thrive, grow, and feel valued.”

The selection process involved two comprehensive surveys. The first, completed by credit union leaders, asked detailed questions about their workplace policies, practices, philosophy, systems and demographics. The second, completed by credit union employees, asked workers about their own experience, covering everything from pay and benefits to company leadership.

Across the board, employees gave credit unions high marks as places to work. According to Best Companies Group’s survey data, 92% of respondents felt positively about their supervisor, 89% felt satisfied with their role at the company, and 88% felt confident in their company's leadership and planning.

"Our culture is built on collaboration, transparency, and trust,” said Will Schirmer, Chief Human Resources Officer at United. “We’ve created an environment where feedback is welcomed, ideas are celebrated, and every team member has a voice in shaping our future. This recognition is a testament to the strength of our people-first philosophy and the incredible contributions of Team United.”

Best Companies Group managed the overall registration and survey process, analyzed the data, and determined the final rankings. To be considered, participants had to be a credit union, have at least 15 eligible employees and be in business a minimum of one year. Winners will be recognized by American Banker.

This marks another milestone in United’s commitment to workplace excellence. Earlier this year, United was also named one of the Top 10 Inspiring Workplaces in North America by the Inspiring Workplaces Group, making it the highest-ranked financial institution on the list.
