SOUTH BEND, Ind. – United Federal Credit Union (United) spent the summer counting every strikeout for the South Bend Cubs. The reason? For every strikeout the Cubs threw in the 2025 season, United pledged to donate $5 to help the Food Bank of Northern Indiana.

“As soon as we saw the chance to support the Food Bank of Northern Indiana through the “Strike Out Hunger” initiative, we didn’t hesitate, we were all in,” said Jacob Alexander, United Senior Market Development Manager. “At United, giving back to our communities is who we are. We’re proud of the work the Food Bank is doing and are especially grateful to the South Bend Cubs for offering us a chance to be part of the Food Bank’s important mission.”
The Cubs had 1,088 strikeouts this season, earning $5 each for a total of $5,440. United rounded up the donation to $6,000 for the “Strike Out Hunger” campaign, marking their first year as sponsor.
“The South Bend Cubs deeply appreciate United Federal Credit Union for standing with us in the fight against hunger,” said Joe Hart, President, South Bend Cubs. “Their generosity and commitment to giving back make a meaningful difference in the lives of those who struggle with food insecurity across Michiana. We appreciate them for being wonderful partners.”

While baseball season has wrapped up, the school year in South Bend is just getting started. The Food Bank of Northern Indiana will use the money from “Strike Out Hunger” to help fund its Food 4 Kids Backpack Program.
“We are so grateful for our partnership with United Federal Credit Union and the South Bend Cubs and their humbling commitment to feed hungry kids during the school year through Strike Out Hunger,” said Marijo Martinec, Food Bank of Northern Indiana Executive Director and CEO. “This partnership allows the Food Bank of Northern Indiana to provide kids with a weekend sack of food during the school year. Because of this, hungry kids can focus on learning during the school day and not about whether they will have something to eat over the weekend.”
United’s support of the Food Bank of Northern Indiana continues into the fall. All four of its Indiana branches are hosting a food drive to benefit the Food Bank. Anyone is welcome to stop by through the end of September to donate.
