Tips to Help Prevent, Detect, & Resolve Fraud

  • Security

In today's digital age, fraud protection is more important than ever. With identity theft and cybercrime on the rise, it's crucial to be proactive in safeguarding your personal information.

Here are some tips to help you prevent, detect, and resolve fraud.

Prevention

  1. Protect Personal Information: Never share sensitive personal information via phone, text message, or email.
  2. Avoid Suspicious Links: Avoid clicking on links or attachments in emails or text messages from unknown senders. These could be phishing attempts.
  3. Use Secure Passwords: Use a password safe to generate and store secure passwords. Never use the same password across multiple accounts.
  4. Freeze Credit Reports: Consider placing a freeze on all three credit reports. This prevents others from opening accounts in your name, and it’s easy to unfreeze your account when needed.
    1. Visit the TransUnion website or call (800) 680-7289.
    2. Visit the Experian website or call (888) 397-3742.
    3. Visit the Equifax website or call (800) 525-6285.

Detection

  1. Set Up Alerts: Monitor your accounts closely by setting up alerts, and quickly report any unrecognized transactions. United’s Digital Banking offers customizable notifications to alert you to suspicious activity.
  2. Monitor Data Breaches: Keep an eye on data breaches mentioned in the news. If you’re impacted, change your password(s) immediately.

Resolution

If you are ever the victim of identity theft or your information has been compromised, take these steps:

  1. Report Identity Theft: Visit identitytheft.gov to report identity theft and get a recovery plan.
  2. File a Police Report: Notify the police that you are a victim of identity theft.
  3. Check for Malware: Get your compromised device reviewed for viruses and malware.
